Day 1
Full salt flats experience

Train cemetery

We start the tour visiting the Train Cemetery, where there are remains from the wagons from the Bolivian Railway Company.

Colchani and micro salt factories

Heading to the Salt Flats we will stop in Colchani town where local shops offer handicrafts and woolen clothes. Here we’ll learn about the salt production of Bolivia.

Eyes of salt

Entering the Salt Flats we’ll see a very unusual geological effect. Aquifers formed by underground rivers of the big Salar.

Flags square and Salt Hotel

We head to Flags square, where we can find many flags from countries all over the world. Here we will see the Dakar Monument as well as the first hotel made out entirely of salt where we’ll enjoy our lunch.

Salar de Uyuni

Photo session time! We’ll spend time taking panoramic, perspective, and mirror reflection (if available) photos.

Incahuasi Island

In the afternoon, we arrive at Incahuasi Island, the largest island in the salt flats. Here we can find fossils of corals, giant cactus and we can observe Tunupa Volcano.

Sunset view

Later we will observe the sunset in the pink blurred horizon of the salt flats and we head to our salt hostel accommodation.

On this day:

Lunch and dinner.

Overnight at Villa Candelaria Salt Hostel, basic dorms (2-6 people) with shared bathroom.

Day 2
Andean deserts

San Juan Town

After breakfast, we move to San Juan, a small village where we will have a moment to buy snacks for the day and use toilets.

Ollagüe Volcano

As we enter the desertic region, we will observe the Ollague Volcano (active) which is sacred for indigenous communities.

Lagoons

Salty lagoons ahead! We continue driving to the Andean lagoons of Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarcota, and Honda. Wildlife such as pink flamingos, Andean ducks, and seagulls are easy to photograph here. Lunch will be served near Laguna Hedionda.

Siloli Desert and Árbol de Piedra

After lunch, we will enter one of the driest deserts on earth. The Siloli desert is at 6000 masl of elevation. This place is home to the famous Stone Tree.

Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve

We will enter the National Park with more visitors in Bolivia. The day doesn’t end until we visit the Red Lagoon and see the pink flamingos living there. After this, we head to our accommodation in Huayllajara town.

Breakfast, Lunch and dinner.

Overnight at Huayllajara Town, basic dorms (4-6 people) with shared bathroom.

Day 3
Hotsprings and surreal deserts

Sol de Mañana geysers and Polkes hot springs

We wake up very early to observe the sunrise in Sol de Mañana geysers activity, then we go to Polkes hot springs where we can swim in these thermal waters.

 

Dali Desert

We head to Dali desert, a surrealistic destination that resembles the iconic paintings of Salvador Dalí.

Green Lagoon and Licancabur volcano

Later, we’ll visit the Green Lagoon, which is also located next to the Licancabur Volcano, a natural border with Chile.

Valley of the Rocks

After we arrive at the border checkpoint of Hito Cajones, we start our way back to Uyuni, stop at a small town for lunch, and then visit the Valley of the Rocks, which is an astonishing place of rock formations.

San Cristóbal and Uyuni

Later we drive to San Cristobal Village, the last village before Uyuni, where there is a church from the XVI century. We arrived in Uyuni at around 17:30.
